Century Batteries
Century Yuasa Batteries is Australia’s oldest and most recognised battery manufacturer with a proud history of designing and manufacturing batteries in Australia since 1928. Century puts millions back into the economy along with employing 600 people, priding itself on being both a good corporate citizen along with maintaining a high retention level among its valued employees.
The objective
To create consumer loyalty for an Australia made product and Century’s corporate quest to become the first Australian manufacturer to turn 100 years old. With only eight years to go, and batteries not being the most ‘glamorous’ of products, the challenge was on.
Our process
From the brief we formulated a plan leveraging our media contacts to gain a cross section of business and consumer exposure. As well as political stakeholders such as the Queensland Premier, we also worked with well-known media personalities, relevant to the product category, who could speak with authority to our target audience.
The result
National morning television coverage, Queensland TV News coverage across all networks, Queensland newspapers and industry publications, from Australian Automotive Aftermarket to Automotive Electrical and Air Conditioning News. Extensive media coverage with ASR beyond $1.5 million reaching close to two million people.

Oji Fibre Solutions
Oji Fibre Solutions is part of the giant international Japanese Oji Group, the fifth largest paper, pulp and packaging manufacturer in the world. They are a major local investor in manufacturing plants in Queensland and Victoria. They produce a range of corrugated board packaging products and paper bags principally for the horticulture, dairy, meat and beverage industries. Market pulps, container board and packaging products are exported to over 25 countries.
The objective
To create a highly publicised event celebrating the opening of their new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant south of Brisbane. We needed to raise the awareness of the new plant among Oji Fibre Solutions’ current and prospective customers across Queensland and Australia and involve stakeholders at the highest positions of the Queensland Government.
Our process
We collaborated with senior executives across OjiFS Australian operations, working closely with their Queensland team along with high-level employees from the parent company in Japan to create an opening event to tick many boxes. Along with lifting the brand with mainstream and niche media outlets, it was important to include the Queensland Government to foster ongoing working relationships. Engagement was critical across the board, from the events company to our network of contacts, within media and government departments to ensure awareness of the event and importantly attendance by key industry sponsors.
The result
The launch event was attended by 180 and included a traditional Japanese ceremony to acknowledge the company’s heritage along with a spectacular display of ‘cardboard creativity’ from Australian employees to showcase the amazing qualities of the innovative products being produced locally. Not only was media exposure value in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but the brand exposure to new and existing companies, as well as relevant Government sectors, was immeasurable. Industry publications were clamouring for as many stories and photographs as we could supply.

Hastings Deering
Headquartered in Brisbane, Hastings Deering is the market leader in construction and mining equipment, having exclusive distribution rights for the sale and rental of Caterpillar heavy equipment, parts and service support in Queensland, the Northern Territory, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Solomon Islands. Employing more than 3,000 people, Hastings Deering operates through a network of 23 business centres.
The objective
To build excitement, anticipation and involvement in a biennial DIG Day for the building and construction industry. With more than 200 Cats in one place, it was a ‘boots-on’ event allowing contractors to roll up their sleeves and put new machines through their paces: to ‘try before they buy’ in real construction environments.
The process
A collective and consultative briefing session was held to begin the process. Face-to-face was important for this project to ensure that all stakeholders were involved in identifying the key objectives and benchmarks for success. It was the perfect event to showcase on national television, so we developed a plan and worked closely with our media contacts to deliver widespread coverage.
The result
DIG Day was a huge success: brand Hastings Deering receiving media coverage across many mediums, the pinnacle – multiple crosses from the event with Channel Nine’s Today Show, broadcast live across Australia. Further coverage was achieved via press releases and photographs featuring in industry periodicals. The campaign achieving close to $700,000 in media (ASR) over and the brand reached close to two million people across all mediums.
McGown has also produced award winning submissions for Hastings Deering including QRC Resources Awards for Women: 2020 Exceptional Woman in Queensland Resources Sector, 2018 Exceptional Tradesperson, Technician, Operator in Queensland Resources and 2016 QRC Exceptional Woman in Queensland Resources Sector.
